SEANATION CUP OFFSHORE FAQ

SEANATION CUP OFFSHORE regatta →
  1. WHAT IS SEANATION CUP OFFSHORE?
This is a 400-mile regular regatta for skippers with experience of night navigation. The minimum license level to participate as a skipper is Yachtmaster Coastal. The regatta is held in the waters of the Canary Islands, with a start in Tenerife or Lanzarote.
  2. HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS ARE THERE?
Usually, no more than 10 teams participate in SEANATION CUP Offshore.
  3. HOW MANY REGATTAS HAVE THERE ALREADY BEEN?
One. The third will take place in 2025.
  4. WHY DOES THE NAME OF THE REGATTA HAVE THE PRESCRIPTION OFFSHORE?
The regatta runs non-stop for about 400 nautical miles, about 4 full days in the Atlantic Ocean, in entirely different weather conditions, day and night. This is comparable to a full-fledged offshore ocean voyage, despite the actual distance from the Canary Islands during the race not exceeding 50 miles.
  5. WHAT EXPERIENCE DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN SEANATION CUP OFFSHORE?
You must be able to operate a boat in fresh winds (up to 35 kts) and high waves, have experience in night navigation, and be able to work with a gennaker. Experience of independent offshore trips is not required; SEANATION CUP Offshore may well be your first such experience.
  6. CAN IT BE DANGEROUS?
Maybe, like any other sailing trip. The short distance from the Canary Archipelago, quite within reach of the coastguard, plays in favor of safety. But it is necessary to keep in mind fresh winds, high waves, racing rhythm, and crew fatigue - all this adds complexity and provokes mistakes. However, all participants have 24-hour communication with the regatta organizers and can request advice or assistance.
  7. WHAT BOATS PARTICIPATE?
Various sizes, from 45 to 56 feet; size handicap applies. All yachts have gennakers.
  8. WHAT IS THE PLAN FOR THE REGATTA?
Boats are accepted on Saturday, training day on Sunday, start at dawn on Monday, finishes last from Thursday evening until mid-day on Friday. On Friday evening, there is an awards ceremony.
  9. WHAT ABOUT THE WEATHER, WHAT EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED?
The waters of Seanation CUP Offshore are usually quite warm: 16-25 degrees, wind 10-30 knots. Rain is possible but unlikely. You will need a set of membranes top + bottom, thermal underwear top + bottom, a fleece jacket, waterproof shoes, a hat, sunglasses, and LOTS of SPF 50 sunscreen.
  10. IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE A NEWCOMER ON YOUR TEAM? OR A CHILD?
Possibly as a cook, provided the candidate’s resistance to pitching and traveling conditions is known in advance. Other sailors must be able to operate the sails and helm in a basic manner. It is important that all team members are not susceptible to seasickness; in the ocean, it can be very disruptive. In general, beginners - graduates of sailing schools - are excellent candidates for sailors: this is excellent practice for them, and their competencies are usually sufficient to participate, provided the captain has adequate experience.
  11. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE?
This depends on the boat you choose to participate in. On average, a whole yacht, including all surcharges, will cost from 6 to 7 thousand euros.
  12. IS IT POSSIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SEANATION CUP OFFSHORE ON YOUR OWN YACHT OR A YACHT CHARTERED ELSEWHERE?
    No.
  13. WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE AND DEPOSITS?
The regatta participation package includes additional insurance; therefore, the deposit you will need to leave the charter company is minimal. In 2024, it is 440 euros - this is the maximum financial risk you bear. We recommend dividing these risks among the entire team, in which case the amount per person will be completely insignificant.
  14. DO I UNDERSTAND CORRECTLY THAT I NEED TO RENT A YACHT FROM YOU, ASSEMBLE A TEAM, AND I THEN BECOME  A PARTICIPANT IN SEANATION CUP OFFSHORE?
Yes, that's right. Moreover, we are very often approached by those wishing to take part in Seanation CUP Offshore as sailors - we send all these people to skippers who still have free places and are willing to accept new people onto their team. So, if you lack like-minded people, contact us - we will try to help!
  15. APPROXIMATELY HOW MUCH MONEY DO THE REGATTA SKIPPERS COLLECT FROM EACH TEAM MEMBER?
    1200-1500 euros.
  16. HOW DO I BOOK A YACHT TO PARTICIPATE?
To reserve a boat, you must pay the full cost of participation.
  17. CAN I CHANGE MY MIND REGARDING PARTICIPATING IN THE REGATTA AFTER PAYING A NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT? WHAT IF AFTER DEPOSITING THE FULL AMOUNT?
In this event, we will try to find people willing to buy the yacht you paid for. Unfortunately, this is the only option to avoid losing all the money you have already deposited.
  18. OK, I BOOKED A YACHT. WHAT’S NEXT?
We will add you to the skippers' chat on Telegram, where you can communicate with other skippers and the organizers on all issues. We will also provide you with visa support and all informative materials on the regatta so that you know what to prepare for and how.
  19. WHICH SAILORS, FROM A FUNCTIONAL POINT OF VIEW, WILL I NEED AT THE REGATTA?
The ideal team in Seanation CUP OFFSHORE looks like this:
    a) Helmsmen - 2 people
    b) Tactician/navigator - a person who determines where and why it is optimal to go to finish the race as quickly and safely as possible
    c) Tank - a sailor working with a gennaker
    d) Fore-tank - for boats 45 feet and longer
    e) Trimmer/pianist - a sailor working with the mainsail
    f) 2 Clews - sailors working with the jib
    g) Captain - decision maker
In reality, it often turns out that the captain combines his role with the helmsman or tactician.
  20. I AND/OR MY TEAM MEMBERS NEED TO APPLY FOR A SCHENGEN VISA TO GO TO THE REGATTA. CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THIS?
Yes, we will provide all the necessary documents no later than 60 days before the start of the regatta.
  21. WHAT PAYMENT OPTIONS DO YOU HAVE?
Non-cash transfer in euros to a European bank account.
